Dead asparagus?
« on: April 24, 2008, 17:07:18 »
I had a look today to see if there was any sign of life on my asparagus. Out of about 12 plants, only 2 had any sign of life- shoots about an inch high. I may be being pessimistic, but we did get an awful lot last year. Could the plants be exhausted, and if so might they come back next year or is that it?

Don't worry Caroline mines been in 15 years and I expect a few more good years yet. Last year I was giving it away at this time but theres no show yet this time around. We need a few more warm days yet.

The soil's been too cold for anything to grow at any rate. It should be warming up now, just give it time.

Have had 4 spears today!

Rest only an inch or two out of the ground, and this is the sunny south...

Last year was a very strange year... maybe this one will be more like the weather expected..
What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

It is al due to the low temperature we have had this spring.

I planted out seedlings to add to my hoard last year and they are just popping through. One which was left in a pot in the unheated greenhouse is already turning into a fern. The established ones are still sleeping.

No wonder farmers use polly tunnels for a lot of the things they grow. Getting vegetables up before everyone else must mean that they can get more money for their crops.

My four year old crowns are not showing either..I thought they might be dead as well  :(

If they are I'll be gutted as this year I can taste it for the first time

Oh well fingers crossed...

No sign of anything from ours either.

Last year was such a strange year early on, it has made us all forget what time of year it really is.

Even the bindweed is only just starting to show! :)
