project
« on: April 20, 2008, 18:36:32 »
Our allotment have started a project to encourage children to appreciate wildlife and be interested in growing food. We have only been working hard at getting the site ready for an open day at the begining of May. Our chairwoman had a vision (which I must admit seemed a bit far fetched at the time) of exactly what she wanted and it is so nice to see things progressing. We got   a portacabin for the lottie holders and also any schools that want to have  a lesson there before they do any gardening. It was a grotty thing when it first came on the site but with a new roof and a lick of paint it looks great. We have  bird garden and over the weekend we have been making a wildlife pond.Sometimes getting involved with things can really make a difference to the way we ourselves appreciate things. Fortunately we have had the time over this weekend to help with things. Will keep you posted as to how it progresses

I think it sounds fab too and I look forward to seeing the updates.  I garden for wildlife here but sadly there isn't room to swing a small child - otherwise I love to link up with a local school.   ;)  ::)  ;D

Wow, I can see that some hard work has gone into that. :o

I like the idea of lining the various areas with fallen trees.  Are they from the site?  Do let me know if you need any seeds to attract wildlife.  I've got a number of spare 'half packets' which I am unlikely to need.  :)

We get the logs and bark delivered from a tree surgeon and Yes we could use any seeds to attract the wild life. Thanks for the offer

Oh you are most welcome.   ;D  I'll be saving seeds again this year so if you need more, remind me towards the end of the summer I'll let you know what I have to spare.

Well what do you know. Some *******'s have got into the portacabin in the project garden and stolen a load of stuff out of it. Sometimes I wonder if its worthwhile putting yourself out for folks just to have things trashed.

Thankyou all for the sympathetic posts. We had furnished the cabin with a kitchen unit and filled it with crockery and cutlery as well as stuff to make drinks and snacks for folks on the site to use. All this had gone, they even took the cutlery. Luckily they hadn't taken the tables and chairs that we had in there. I know its only material stuff but it just makes me so bluddy mad. To top it all our wheelbarrow has been trashed on our other plot and someones Gh and a cold frame has been smashed. We have a meeting with the police set up for Monday by the police to lias with allotment holders from Kingstanding,Sutton and Erdington. I think the only thing that would keep them out is an electric fence or a mine path all around the plots

Really sorry to hear this Shirl. So disheartening when people go all out to do good in this world. Pity they don't put their energies in to doing some good in their neighbourhood then again I would think we have more chance of being the next Astronaut to  the moon than see that day.
