How deep?

How deep do you plant things?  What I mean is, I now know that it is good to plant toms nice and deep so they root from the stem.  Does the same apply to brassicas?  And what about lettuce and things?  Should things only be planted out as deep as they were growing in their pots, or do you plant them down to the seed leaves?  This is something I have never really been sure of, and I suspect I am about to get lots of different suggestions and reasons.  :-/

 Some plants are capable of initiating roots- botanically adventitious roots- along their entire stem. At this time of the morning tomatoes are the only common vegetable I can think of that have this ability. Most other vegetable plants should be set out as deep as they were in their pots as they do not produce these roots.
 Pricking out has different criteria though.

Toms, yes, for that reason. Other things I put in, right or wrong, as deep as I can to give them support, especially brassica. With lettuce, I try not to bury any seed leaves, in case they rot. Leeks, of course, I drop into a 10" hole.
So much depends on how well the plant has grown in the pot - leggy or not? Well. that's my offering! = Tim
