pre-chitting sweetcorn, pumpkin and winter squash
« on: April 05, 2008, 12:47:16 »
I have decided to try pre-chitting these seeds before planting. I have set this up today. How long would it take these seeds to sprout?

I am growing the following sweetcorn@

Conqueror F1
Minipop
extra tender and sweet f1

and the following squash:

SC4-15 F1
Hundredweight
sugar pie
bush buttercut
sweetmeat
big max
Red Kuri
Waltham Butternut

Thanks Jeannine for 4 of the above!  ;D

I didn't know you could Chit squash seeds, can i ask how do you do it?

I have some Winter Squash Hokkaido seeds that I have put 10 seeds in and only 1 has come through ( in a heated prop in a heated greenhouse).

Chitting could be the answer.

Cor! I didn't know that either. I've tried to chit parsnips this year (it was successful last year) but I didn't put them in a poly bag ::) They kept drying out. Going to have a proper go now, thanks Mal. ;D

You will not be able to put your sweetcorn out into the ground till early June in Edinburgh. Even then, I use cloches in Glasgow for the first month.
You should be able to transfer them to a Greenhouse in April, a cold frame in May, before planting out in the ground.
You started a bit early for the North of the UK.
I am just about to start mine.
