Seed potatoes - all gone
« on: April 01, 2008, 11:45:33 »
Very strange this. The Mrs and I went round several garden centres looking for seed potatoes, and they had all finished with them.
There were just a few scrag-ends in one shop, and that was all we could find. We were after our regular Maris Piper, and don't need to plant them till mid-late April, so why do they stop selling them so soon?

We came home with two 1kg bags of Orla's and ordered the rest on line from Dobies.

It is probably that Easter came early..There's the traditionalists that like to think that  good friday is the deadline to plant their potatoes ..
Also garden centres get packed out over Easter so what was left  got sold.
Cheers .. Jim

DIY stores like Homebase or B+Q usually have some left over...

You could try smaller outlets, our local greengrocer sells seed potatoes, shallots and onion sets and still has a good range.

To be honest, we went to B&Q first as they usually have a vast display with loads and loads of different varieties. But they had cleared the lot out.
Also, it was Homebase where we found the scrag ends. Even our favourite local independent garden centre had got rid.

We'll certainly know next time, or just order online regardless.

Wilkinsons are still selling them if that helps.

No good to you if you dont live in Derbyshire or thereabouts though!

I went to Wyvale today and I don't think they could have sold hardly any. The shelves were packed with every variety you could possibly need.
Odd isn't it?....Now, If I'm remember this for next year and don't order in time online, they won't have any left. Murphy's Law as they say...Tut Tut!!!  ::)

I dont like to order online simply because I like to look at what Im buying.

I suppose if you have been ordering online for a while and know what you are going to get it wouldnt be such a problem
