Topic: harvesting horseradish

well, my two horseradish plants that are safely (I hope!!!) restrained in a sunken dustbin look very happy and healthy, and have put on a lot of growth since planting.

Question is, how do you harvest the roots?  And how do you know when they're ready to harvest?

Do I need to wait until new plants spring up, and digl those out whole, or do you try and dig down and just remove roots from the main plants?

Never grown this stuff before....

When planted?  Is the soil loose enough for you to scuff around the roots? Have a look?
Ours is so old that we just hack at it when we need it.

I think it was perhaps march or april.   Rooting around (sorry 4 pun!!) in the soil will probably be a good idea, will do that tonight... this is not helping me to concentrate on what I'm _supposed_ to be working on before the lure of the lottie becomes irresistable though!!!
