You didn't think I'd let you get away with it?
« on: March 17, 2008, 07:33:36 »
Last evening, I wrote to Dan saying it was taking 2-5 min between each 'window' on A4A, but all other forums were spot on.
Then it suddenly did an auto reboot & came up with this -

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v164/photo04/general/prob1855x642.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v164/photo04/general/prob1855x642.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v164/photo04/general/prob4855x642.jpg

After which it was so slow tthat I went to bed. But I noticed that everyone else was posting as normal.

Why me??

Tim are you sure you havent got a virus.

All these corrupt files, sounds like you may have something nasty on your pc.

I am sure one of the Tech guys will be able to give you a better answer to this, but in my experience, a worm of some sort will corrupt files, stop things opening and causing problems that you have been experiencing.

Maybe be worth updating your virus software and running a scan, see what happens.

I had the same problems with the site being slow last night.

The pictures you have linked to have nothing to do with it though. If the volume is dirty it means your hard drive is failing. I suggest you make sure everything is backed up & get yourself a new drive.

this is a problem with your hard drive.
first off I would back up your critical data to removeable media (eg cdrom)

Occaisionaly a thorough hard disk scan will fix these errors but they will usually return requiring replacement drive.

One things for certain it has nothing to do with A4A the time delays
Try a thorough scan by booting into XP's recovery console

copied from the net ...........
Accessing the Recovery Console with a Windows CD
If you have a full Windows disk, the console can be accessed by booting from the Windows XP CD. It will take its time loading the setup but eventually you will see the “Welcome to Setup” screen. Enter the letter “r” and a prompt will appear asking for the administrator password. Users of the Home edition or those without an administrator password can just enter a blank. (Note that this password is not necessarily the same as the one for a user account, even if that account has administrator privileges). The screen will then show a numbered list of all your Windows installations (most people will have only one.) It will ask, "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto?" Unless you have a multi-boot system, enter the number "1". You must enter a number. Do NOT just press the Enter key. Some time may pass but eventually the Recovery Console will load and provide a command prompt where various system tasks can be performed.

.........  then at the command prompt type the following
chkdsk C: /r

Same here - when my hard drive went kaput it did so without any warning, or maybe i didn't recognise the warnings. I am on dial up so everything is pretty slow anyway.

Unfortunately you don't always get a warning when a drive is failing things like powercuts or more commonly power surges can kill a drive instantly. Sometimes you do get multiple warnings but they are only listed in the error log & windows doesn't even bother trying to correct the problem that is surprisingly common.

It's most likely to be a virus, I don't think microsoft would use dirty to describe the state of a drive.
Corrupt or unstable, but never dirty.

Boot into safe mode and do a full virus check from there.

if the drive is gradually dying and doesnt just blow up imminent failure can be forseen by turning on the SMART technology feature in the computers bios.
This is if it is supported by your motherboard (most makes) and the hard drive (99% of makes)

SMART technology - S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology)

Corrupt or unstable, but never dirty.

Volumes (drives) that have file system errors are known as dirty volumes. If a volume is dirty it has experienced file system errors.
If a volume's dirty bit is set this indicates that the file system may be in an inconsistent state. The dirty bit can be set because the volume is online and has outstanding changes, because changes were made to the volume and the computer shutdown before the changes were committed to disk, or because corruption was detected on the volume.

I'm a bit of a bystander in all this!!

I have done an Avast check which showed 'clean'. Is that enough?

Sorry about that Tim. Basically the error message that came up means part of your drive is corrupt. Windows has fixed it temporarily but the problem will come back & get worse each time. The solution is to buy a new hard drive to replace the C drive which is failing. If you get a local computer company to replace the drive for you they will be able to copy the contents of your current drive onto it so you will not need to reinstall anything nor will you lose any files you have.
If your computer is still under warranty this problem should be covered.

In the meantime I would make sure all your files are backed up so that if the drive experiences more problems before you get it replaced you won't lose any important documents, photos etc...

I could try & talk you through how to replace the drive yourself but I may confuse you further.

There's too much history there to lose.
