1st & 2nd Earlies - Spuds
« on: March 01, 2008, 23:56:59 »
My potatoes are chitting away nicely.  Just have a query as my 2nd earlies have chitted more than the 1st earlies.  In fact they've not only got nice thick purple shoots they've started to get inch long roots coming off them.

Now I don't think I've muddled my 1st & 2nds up.  But am I best planting them all now and keeping them undercover?  They're all going in containers so I can move them outside later.

They certainly sound like they are ready and if you can keep them "in" then yes get them planted...

If you put them in now be prepared to cover them once they start to show through if there's any chance of frost - otherwise it'll set you back 3 weeks.
If you've got heavy soil then you're probably wasting your time as it won't be warm enough yet to encourage growth and if the weather forecast is correct it'll be cooled down again next week.

My 2nd earlies also seem to be progressing quicker than my 1st earlies, but I know I've not muddled them up as I've got loads more more 2nd than 1st.
