Topic: plant/shrub ideas

I have a garden not a lottie, half of which is patio and a total sun trap in the summer. i usually use it for growing pots and grow bags of tomatoes, chillis and peppers etc i also have a few pots, troughs etc that have some spring bulbs in etc but what i would like is a couple of shrubs/plants that can be grown in pots on a sunny patio and preferably dont cost the earth, ie available in some of the cheaper stores. they need to be fairly hardy and would be nicer if they didnt totally die off in the winter though not the end of the world any ideas? not too big would be good too

Canna, Mirabilis, Dahlia. Not shrubs but good for summer colour and cheap.

Cistus ladanifer (Gum Cistus). Pretty flowers, but I like it for the scent from the aromatic leaves on a sunny summer's day. Underplant it with some Nemesia aromatica which smells of chocolate.

Christmas Box, great scent at guess when? cheap at B&Q at the moment .

Blueberries. The berries would help defray the initial cost. Red leaves in the Fall. They'd need to be kept watered, good mulching would help. There is a pot variety which is smaller.

how about a couple of cordylines in pots? they're dead cheap for small ones from places like Wilko's, architectural, evergeen and will like the sunny aspect. I have some on my small patio and for extra colour use summer/ winter bedding around the edges of the pots.

A Bay Tree, Euonymus, Aucuba Japonica, Dwarf Fruit Trees. My Fuschias don't ever die back in winter and seem to flower all year round. I could send you some cuttings when the time is right (clueless, will have to read up about this) but my ex neighbour took cuttings from my plants ok  :)

Oh Oh, I forgot to say Wyvale had 5 plants for £20, I bought some for Mother-In-Law.

A very nice plant for a largish pot is a CHOISYA.  It is a lovely colour of green and is evergreen. The leaves smell nice and in summer it has small delicate white flowers.  They are easy to take cuttings of too.  Spotted Laurel which has already been mentioned is dead easy and it can be pruned anytime.
