Had a fence built 6' high which they could jump but haven't been that hungry we guess since they've never come inside. Resident dog Hobbs- the best-doggy-in-the-world but now deceased yet not forgotten.

The Fruit Gate we call it. I carved the design on pressure treated wood (bad idea!). One good case of carpal tunnel.  Looks much better with clematis clambering over but have no pix of that.

The kids were home which gave impetus to digging the first pond. The son in the foreground and his wife-to-be in the background caused the pond to be slightly heart-shaped. This was in 1995. Now their children love dabbling in the pond.

Finished pond plus Hobbs cooling off. We dug it right at base of existing rhody which helped it fit into the landscape. somehow the rhody has thrived.

There was a grass path after the pond and the mower kept throwing up weed andgrass seed into the perennial bed. Plus, we liked the little pond so much I started thinking about a larger pond.

So in Fall of 2002 I dug up all the perennials, transplanted them to safe place, and began digging with my shovel. Children and hubby had enough digging with the first pond they said so this became my "health spa".  I positioned the pond at the foot of an existing jap.blood something maple and some holly bushes. About halfday sun which isn't a great idea but put it in full view of our living room windowwhich we really enjoy eah and every day. Quite a mess, eh (for you Canadians)?

Finally roped hubby into helping me make sure everything was going to be level which proved to be the hardest part of the job. Anybody can dig a hole it seems but not everybody can see if it is level.  Put old carpeting in bottom. should NOT have made sloped sides but was trying to maximize the width of the liner. Makes it VERY slippery.
One month later me and my hip-boots in "Lake Eeerie."

WINTER on the shores of Lake Eeerie.  Ahhh- waterfront property at last! ;)

2003 Hubby roped into building a bridge. His pond has its own circulation thru an ionizing filter. Mine is "natural", no filter just put in barley straw in old stockings which keeps algae down for the most part except early Spring
Perennials filling in again.

Wow how lovely! Your pond is about half the size of my garden  :'(

Mine will be a small modest affair, as long as it holds water, I guess the frogs wont mind too much :D

Love the apple rabbit, fox, deer and Hobs.

Thanks for the inspiration hun, I need some at the moment. Me old ticker is misbehaving at the moment so not getting a lot done (apart from seed sowing)

Star, the frogs will find your pond no matter what size. It is such an amazing process to watch nature move in after the water is added. I hope you can get some help with yours rather than tire yourself out- it is heavy work and too easy to push the body beyond what is reasonable when enthusiasm takes the lead. Get better soon.

Thank you GA, I will certainly have help. I wont get much chance to do any heavy stuff as I will be the official whip cracker and tea maker.......I'd better make some cakes too, to encourage the workers ;D ;D

A whip and High Tea for the UK ditch diggers: pizza for Americans (you can see the box in the picture of our ditch diggers). What ever works.
If the ground is too dry wetting it down a day or two beforehand makes the job a bit easier.

I MIGHT let them know that.......heeheehee 8) But at the moment its frozen solid and has been for three days.

Actually pizza sounds good too, it would save me doing the 'mother Walton' thing.

Stunning pics, GA.  It must give you as much pleasure looking at the pics as looking at the real thing.  I love the way it changes with the seasons - very dramatic  :) :) :) :) :)

I wonder if all gardeners don't become photographers eventually. The latest addiction is making DVDs out of the garden pictures which I set to musical backgrounds (Chopin or our grandson at the piano are favorites) so I can watch them in the winter. ::)
