Another Asparagus Question
« on: January 29, 2008, 16:07:13 »
Hi all,
I bough some asparagus crowns from local GC yesterday and note they are sprouting.  One has approx 8" of growth.

Conditions are not quite right at the moment to plant out (plot under water), so I was planning on potting up.  My question is, should I completely cover the new growth, or just cover the crown and leave the new growth exposed to the elements?

thanks

I wondered exactly the same thing!! The crowns we bought had no growth on them, just looked like weird octopus creatures, but the ones I saw in    B & Q etc. had a few inches of growth on them. Will watch replies with interest.

If it's Rosie's allotment - how come Muggins here does so much digging?

Steve
Lay the crowns out flat in a seed tray and cover with 2-3 cms of compost. A bit like chitting potatoes.
You only need to cover the crown and not all the new growth
