Our goose was cooked all right!!
« on: January 28, 2008, 22:34:41 »
We have all seen movies were somebody cooks the turkey, looks delicious as it comes from the oven and when the carving knife goes in you see a puff of dust as it is so dry

Well yesterday I cooked a goose, another one of the great number I have cooked over the years.

It looked big John  put it in the roaster so I didn't feel it

I thought it odd that it didn't relaease much fat.

I went to take it out and it felt so light I couldn't believe it.

Then we cut it!!!

This was basically an empty carcass covered in skin.

We couldn't believe our eyes, it must have starved to death.

I have never seen anything like this before,John collapsed into laughter, then me.

We could not even face the thought of trying to scrape the scraps of meat off the bone, and I do mean scraps.

Has anybody ever seen this.

The goose came from Germany, are they different??

And no I didn't overcook it!!

I doubt if I will ever be able to buy another one, it really was a skeleton covered in skin.

We had poached eggs on toast for dinner as John flatly refused to have anything to do with it.

Still laughing!!

Hi Jeanne

Maybe it lost all that weight on the walk from Germany?!!

Poor bird though it makes you think that it probably wasn't too well before it died!

Ah Well - I will leave that soap box today!

Perhaps it was a case of  'Christmas has been, the geese are getting thin'   :)

Where did you buy it from? Doesn't sound as if it was of merchantable quality!

I misread that your goose was cooked all night and thought, "well what did you expect!". How disappointing...

I have generally found duck to be nothing but skin and bone with a thin scraping of flesh around the legs... goose on the other hand is generally well fleshed so this is quite surprising!

I would love to have seen the look on your faces when you cut into the bird!

We had a similar incident involving a souffle many years ago - on taking it out of the oven it had the most beautiful dome - it had risen perfectly.  Only when we cut into it that dome turned out to be about half a centimeter thick with nothing but air underneath it.

No one in my family has made a souffle ever again...

We are still laughing, not really funny though with all the scary press about birds. My Dutch family brought it over with them when they came, they live on the German border almost. Maybe it was the travelling that knocked the stuffing out of it.LOL
