Did you get fertilizer granules anywhere near the stem?

I accidentally 'burnt' some cucumber plants this way when I first started gardening - and they did smell rather awful as well once the damage was done.  The stem on that cauliflower looks similar to my cukes after the fertilizer had done its damage.

My guess is frost damage!!

Frozen water sitting at the base of the leaves has frozen and damaged the stem tissue.

It can sometimes happen after the weather has been very wet followed by a sudden hard frost.
