Please help.......chitting potatoes
« on: January 23, 2008, 16:57:01 »
Hello,

I think I need some advice! I have just come back from a 2 week skiing holiday (where i just happened to injure my back and neck) to find that my potatoes have been delivered.

The person house minding 4 me took them in but have left them in the box.

I took them out of the box this afternoon only to find long white growths on them. I was quite pleased at first (thinking they had been chitting) but then I read the instruction leaflet which said they needed to be in the sunlight and the chits should be purple in colour.

It also said if the chits were white it was because they had been kept too warm and in the dark (which they had).

Are my potatoes completely ruined?

Is it a problem that the growths are white and not purple?

Please help as these are the first potatoes I have tried to grow.

I have Maris pipers, Charlotte and Cara

Thanks!!!!

I'd break them off, they will knock off easily! and then chit them properly you will loose a little vigour but they will survive...

Just to add -

1. Light, NOT sunlight.

2. It is claimed that you can plant with 12" long white sprouts but a. it's too soon to plant, & b. they're hell to plant!

So - agree!
