Greenhouse smashed again!!
« on: January 25, 2008, 10:00:18 »
 >:(

Its very stormy here in Stirling and 4 more panes of glass have been blowen out.

I think its mainly my fault as i didnt get the door fixed with new glass in time and the wind blew right in.

Gonna get it sorted today.

So heres a good tip.........dont leave any missing panes of glass as it ends up costing more to repair!

you and me both Chris.

Both plastic and glass greenhouses took direct hits whilst I was down south.  Plastic one is going to become a shade house now.  Glass one threw broken glass all over my beds and next doors garden.  Haven't counted the total damaged yet (as some panes remained whole and are currently stacked inside waiting to be refitted but 10 panes actually came adrift.

As I'd lifted a load of gravel to wash before I left on my travels in October, the whole plot looks pretty much like a war zone.

Still, gives me something to do now I'm back eh ?

I was thinking that, but with the strong winds i have heard it doesnt break just flys away as it bends with the wind.  Talking 70-90 mph gusts here just now.

went up to my almost favourite shop in the world this morning and was thinking of buying a whole pack of B&Q own perspex panes (£74 for a 6'x6' set) and keeping the leftovers as standbyes for the next time!  Then thought, well hang on, let's count the broken ones first !  most of the z clips have gone awol and B&Q have run out (unsurprisingly).

got home and studied broken g/h more closely and counted 3 smashed panes, the rest must just have bounced. It now seems a bit excessive to buy a whole set for just three panes.  lol.  Might just do though as last time I got a toughened replacement pane for the roof vent, it cost me a tenner, so if I can find space to store them, the whole kit would be better value for money.

So relined the g/h borders and replaced all the gravel that i'd dug out at the end of October and had a lovely day doing some of the things that should have been done in November.  not a bad morning's work all in all and I truely feel at home again now.

naturally the rain is back on again now.

Welcome Back MrsKP. Glad to hear Damage not as bad as you first thought.
My Polycarbonate Greenhouse managed to stay upright this time and no running around the garden at midnight chasing panels. Maybe it was the 12 tubes of silicone that did the trick 8).
With over 500 fuchsia plants on the go, Can't afford for any mishaps this year.
See you at work Monday and wife was asking after you and Gordon.

I really do feel at home now - and have got a cold !  I wonder if I could swing another couple of days on the sick .... I mean no one wants a cold even if work is where I must have got it from lol.

I was thinking about sealant, presumably that would "give" when the whole frame swayed ?

Regards back to the missus Bob.

I was also thinking of sealant as I just used loads on my observatory (it was letting in loads of water).

On the green house it would stop any drafts, may be a god idea.

and how do you do it ?  glaze and then seal over the top, or put a line of sealant down both sides of the frame and then put the panes in ?  and do you seal where the two panes overlap ?

see i knew there was a couple of reasons that i hadn't done it up until now lol
