Where to find Onion sets?
« on: January 08, 2008, 22:05:13 »
Getting ready for planting in Feb/March and wondered if there were any places where there are onion sets, potatos and Garlic bulbs for sale, like Lidl, B & Q etc.
Any other items i should be buying? Or bargains to be had??

Thanks

You'll find any bargains in the 'Bargains Galore' section. Can you explain the poll? What are we voting for?

Just for info - I bought some onion sets from B&Q last week.  They also had Garlicand spuds.

Im thinking it might be a bit early for the onions - on the packet it says 'early spring'.
Instead I have got the ball rolling with some onion seeds which are on my windowsill in an unheated propogator.  I hope its not too cold for them.

Slightly off topic, but when is everyone planning to actually plant their sets?

My first bag (Hercules from the Organic Gardening Catalog) has just arrived, which has caught me by surprise - I wasn't planning to plant until  March.

Will they'll keep ok in hessian bag in cool storage ?

They should keep alright in a cool place Barnowl, I planted mine in mid March last year two weeks after my spuds went in when frosts had past.  ;D ;D ;D

I generally pop mine in sometime in Feb... depends on the weather as to which date (i.e. a weekend when its not raining!)

Picked some up at Wilkinson's at the weekend, but had to look through a few bags as a lot were showing little patches of mould.  Still good value if you get some clean ones.  I'm storing mine in the dark in the garage to keep until March/April time, better than in a hot bright shop.

Accidentaly bought some dalia tubers and canna's at the same time.  Woops
is it in the sale?

I popped into B&Q for my 'Stuttgarter' ration.
The bulbs were OK, too early to buy but one must keep them cool & dark until planting time.
Next Christmas rubbish should be in soon I suppose?
Also grabbed a bag of Arran Pilot for the same reasons!
