Have just put online a free to use database of over 160+ vegetables, herbs and fruit.
Each entry includes cultivation instructions, soil requirements, etc. More are being added daily.

Nice! quick way to get succinct advice, except I do have a small remark to make. Everywhere the word "sewing" has been used instead of "sowing"..ooops looks like you've been stitched up there guv'

Soil Moisture   Average   Minimum light   Full sun
Vicia faba: Papilionaceae
Cultivation
Goes well with a nice glass of Chianti! Sow early under cloches. Transplant when true leaves have appeared (3-4). Pinch out tips as they grow. May need staking. Grow in double rows. Do not let beans get too large or will become tough. Freeze well.

Not automatically, but buyers will be able to download updates to the database on a monthly basis (from January).

As it says, the database is free to use online.

The £9.99 you are referring to is to download the VGA software that includes the database but also has many more recording/planning features as well.

Well done you! It's a fantastic database! I'll download it if its ok for mac, will it be easy to update? how would this work? would you ditch the old database and replace with the updated one? sorry if these are stupid questions!!

Unfortunately it will only run on Windows machines.

Trying to avoid going into a long explanation of the software:
Via the software you can add your own varieties on your own machine or you can wait for downloads - you can't mix the two at the moment. Any other data that you enter though (such as what you have sown, soil treatments, thinning, harvesting, etc) is not affected. However, in a later release you will be able to import plant data without overwriting any you have entered.
