It is nearly 2008...gardening resolutions
« on: December 02, 2007, 20:24:26 »
Well after the terrible last year when we ended up with prctically nothing thanks to the floods I am just starting to think about soil and seeds etc and am wondering if you have any New Year gardening resolutions.

Personally I am just glad that I am thinking about seeds etc, my allotments are jungles and I have a lot of catching up to do , they are almost covered now . At first  when the floods hit  and  watching most things rot in the ground and being so busy due to floods in the workplace I wondered if I would ever garden again, but we bounce back thank goodness.

We have one covered fortunately and the other will be covered shortly.

resolutions,   Not to take things so seriously, grow a little, rest a little and don't try to break any records. One thing I have learned from this year is..whatever hits the garden the weeds grow again and another year with new hopes pop up.

So what are your resolutions for your garden etc

 XX Jeannine
When God blesses you with a multitude of seeds double  the blessing by sharing your  seeds with other folks.

well, I remember wishing for a little bit of everything this year, we did quite well, we got a little of everything and quite a lot of a few things..
so..next year, the same, if we can get a little of everything we plant to see what they're like and a bit more of some of the things we liked, I'll be well peased  ;D
hope this makes sense
also, the time and sense to appreciate what we have  :)

I have a thought to not buy so many seeds, I've just given myself a fright at just how many packets I seem to have collected over the years and have tonight tried to plan out what I'm going to grow and where next year. Mind you, New Year's resolutions are not my strong-point and this could be half-hardy... I mean half-hearted...  ::) ;) :)

I have a thought to not buy so many seeds - yeah, right!!

Mine are

1) Never sow anything in to a pot or tray that hasn't been washed (some hope)
2) Plant later so that things are ready to go out after the frosts, not three weeks before hand (but I just get too excited come the middle of March)
3) Keep on top of the weeds (see No 1)
4) Keep the planting plan gpoing (that one might work)

My resolutions are tempered somewhat by the late start to the season I will have, time and money:

1.)  Get at least a third of the allotment cleared, sorted into beds and planted by the end of March.

2.)  Get the remainder of the allotment cleared, sorted into beds, the polytunnel up and ready for planting come the end of July (for overwintered crops).

Grow more main crop tats to last us through the winter.
Not to grow funny coloured beans cos hubby only relates to green!
My shallots didn't keep well so will pass on them.
More swede and less cabbage.
Find more recipes for yellow and red frozen raspberries.
Make more redcurrant jelly.
..........and will find the secret as to why rhubarb won't perform on my plot  ;D
If I ever get it all right - then that's the time to quit.

Grow something I've not tried before. Next year it's going to be celery.
NOTbother with stuff no-one eats e.g. J A's and Swiss Chard.
Grow more flowers for cutting
Win prize for best plot ;D

For the allotment, grow more flowers for cutting and stick with successional sowing, not run out of steam with it in the middle of the season which I do every year ::).

1. Keep more up-to-date allotment/garden diary (blog).
2. Plant out things that have been sown in modules instead of just leaving them for months looking sad and miserable in their little square spaces.
3. Sow more seeds.
4. Find the packet of Coreopsis to sow alongside red cabbage (article in Nov BBC mag - Garden? about gardens in Sweden)
5. Am sure I'll think of something..
