Topic: Soil preparation for flowers?

having just ordered my RHS seeds,I'm thinking of keeping a bigger section of my allotment for flowers next year. Is it worth adding compost, manure etc to the soil as we dofor veg, or can flowers survive in poorer soils?

I would say that if you have got perennials or biannuals then a bit of goodness will be great. But if youve got annuals if theres to much good stuff they will produce lots of leaf and not much flower until much later.

But there will always be exceptions.

It's also good to have some moisture retaining stuff in there as well though. If the soil is very poor, it might produce a better show if you add compost. and stop you having to water your flower patch in summer.

Otherwise if the soil is in good condition, don't go mad with valuable compost! You can always add it as a top-dressing later on if needed.
