wallflowers advice please
« on: October 22, 2007, 20:09:51 »
Just got some bare root wallflowers. Are they best planted at the soil levell they were grown at or a little deeper?
Am I right in thinking slugs love them?
Thanks

Best at old level and plant firmly. They do not like a loose soil. Slugs adore them.

I beg to differ eric. Wallflowers are brassicas, so they stem root. Planting a bit deeper (to just below the lowest leaves) will make them stronger rooting and establish better. Plus you get foliage right to the base with no bare stems exposed, (which makes them look a bit gangly). I have always planted deep and always had good results.

Yes I had in the back of my mind you plant them like cbbages so I think I will do that.
I can get sawdust easily from work, do you think some round each plant would deter slugs?

Planted deeply here they rot off! Take the risk if your soil is well drained.

Although the drainage of my garden soil varies, where I plant wall flowers its reasonably well drained. Never had any losses from rotting off.
