DTW,  That site looks very very interesting !!!

You can publish books on this site.
http://www.lulu.com/uk
They get printed and sent out when people buy them.
So great for short runs and one-offs.

fab idea, calendula!
I don't have any recipes of my own to contribute yet, but if you'd like a hand putting it together I'd be happy to help (book design is my day job :))

just had a look at that site, too, and it looks really good.
e.g. for a 6" x 9" 192 page book (16 pages in a signature, 12 signatures - one per month) coil bound (so it stays open when you're using it) it would cost a maximum of a fiver per copy :o

it would be quite difficult working out the actual cost and I had in mind something a bit cheaper, proceeds to Dan as well. This would be a bit time consuming for me but if anyone wants to organise it please feel free as it could be the start of something very good

are you offering norfolklass  ;D

half the size, 96 pages, would be £3.75 (although actually I don't think it's like traditional printing where you have to work in 16s) so we could get the cost down by reducing the number of pages

are you offering norfolklass  ;D

I might be :) I'm more than happy to do the design/putting it together and getting it printed if someone else wants to gather together all the recipes and photos...

how about I put it together as already suggested in 'Pages', send it to you for improvement and suggestions etc and you do the 'lulu' bit

not sure what would happen to contributions to Dan though  ???

sounds good to me :)
I guess it all depends how much people are prepared to pay for a copy – if it costs £3.50 per copy to print, it could sell for £4.50 with a pound per copy to A4A... but £4.50 might still be too expensive

what kind of price do people have in mind?

I think £5 sound really good - much cheaper than many recipe books out there and hopefully this will be much more relevant to the members of this site. Its great that there are keen people willing to organise!

Everybody could also advertise the book on their blogs and websites.

The best way of compiling the recipes would be to have a thread to submit recipes
in a standard format with pictures.
e.g.
1. Picture of the final cooked item.
2. Ingredients
3. Pre-preparing (soaking or salting of ingredients etc)
4. Method including any additional pictures.
5. History of the recipe (if any).
The author could then just cut & paste from the page to the document.

Simple.  :D     (it probably won't be though). ::)

thanks dtw - I guess it doesn't really matter how people send them (either to me or start a new thread) but pics would have to be sent to me directly as jpegs as I won't be able to cut and paste them from here  ???

we're getting there

sooooo, get clicking and typing folks and we can begin  ;D

 ;D

Great idea, as I am creatively challenged the best I can do is vow to buy at least two copies at a fiver a shot!

as no one has sent me any recipes or photos to start the book off I think maybe it wasn't such a good idea  :'(

I could trawl the archives and ask permission to use any recipes I choose but that would be time consuming and not very collaborative - so for now I'll leave it but it is always there as an idea for someone to pick up on  ;)

The book is a great idea Calendula.  Don't think you are being ignored - I reckon peeps are just waiting to cook the recipe so they can photograph the end item as was suggested?  Just a thought.

It is a good point specially as the recipes are seasonal, it may take a while to get everything together waiting for the next lot of seasonal fruit and veg....

Hope to be doing something with marrows soon ;)

How worried would we need to be about 'borrowing' others recipes? I have a lot of recipes that I love but think they come from different cook books rather than my own made up ones.

I dont know if Im right in saying.......as long as you state the origin and give credit to the author/creator of the recipe you get around the copyright. But you may also need permission to use someone else's stuff.

The only other way is to adapt it in some way :-\
