Oh eck!
« on: September 03, 2008, 22:49:17 »
First timer here, as far as shows go, entering into the local Late Summer show on Sat - it's making me sooooooo nervous  :'(

Decided to do:

5 onions - Stuttgart Giant - 'cept they're not, but have tied up the necks with rafia - sand on a plate or curtain rings?

10 raspberry fruits - which ones, really dark red or not so dark?

Rose with a scent - at what stage do I cut it? (lovely scented one in the garden called Guinea - I think)

My squash is sorted with a Queensland Blue (seeds from Cefer - ty)

3 round courgettes - Tondo just about right - but do I wash the flower end to make it neat?

2 any vegetable variety - doing bulb fennel - told no roots and trim the tops to 75-100mm - can I do that in a crescent type shape?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh eck!

Many thanks LBB.

I'm pondering here tonight wondering whether I've got anything worth to putting in ??? (feeling like I'm sitting an exam in the morning).

Could only get white curtain rings for the onions, my garlic skins are shrivelling with the damp. Raspberries, tondo courgettes and fennel have to be picked in the morning - if the rain and slugs have left me anything worth picking.

Roses and fuchsias - being battered as I type, by the wind and rain, but still had to source a bit of black cloth just in case!

Never, not ever again - soo much stress.

Oh 'eck .......................but other half of my brain says,  if we don't "have a go" at these shows, they might not carry on which would be so sad.

Ohhhhhhhhh - so chuffed LBB  ;D - and the collywobbles were there all week!

Cefer's Queensland Blue - 1st
Garlic - 1st
Fennel - 1st
Tondo Courgettes - 1st
Two large roses - 1st
10 x small berries (raspberry) - 2nd
Stuttgart Onions - 2nd
Scented Rose - 2nd
6 x Fuchsia blooms 2 - 2nd
Strawberry Jam - 3rd

Now all you chaps and chapesses - if I can support my local show you all can - just go with what you've got, believe in yourselves and "have a go". We'll lose all these lovely places if newbies don't just come along. It was my first year and no expert here whatsoever 'cos I grow what I like to eat.

Look up your local show and make a note of the date  ;)

The engraved base arrived yesterday................

I'm an official novice!

Thought about putting it on top of the tree instead of a fairy  ;D

Come on chaps and chapesses - go for it next season, keep your local clubs alive and don't be shy - was my first attempt and I blushed all the way up to accepting it.
