Mangles?
« on: June 28, 2004, 13:56:26 »
Asked a chap what these rows of things I have never seen before and he said they were mangles which he uses to make wine from!!  Never heard of them myself!  Has anybody had experience of making wine with these?  He said he will supply me with some seed for next year so I can have ago..

Not a patch on parsnip IMO. Very high water & sugar content, but usually as rough as all get out, short of tannin, frequently just plain nasty. Used to be consumed by farm labourers when there was too much week left at the end of the money. See Fred Archer's references to it in his tales of the Cuckoo Pen in the Vale of Evesham at the start of C20.
