RAW words

Not everyone has heard of Digital RAW, let alone used it. If you are a RAW photographer, how about sharing some of what you know?

Is that anything to do with RAW format for digi photography, Ken?

I don't know anything about it personally but I remember the police photographer trainers going on about it at NPIA....  doesn't help you any though!

Yes, Snoozi', it's an alternative way to take pictures.
I've just started shooting in RAW but have come up against a problem in that the RAW files aren't being recognised and wondered if there's a RAW brain out there who could answer some questions...got to be informative for everyone if it's on here, eh?

That Rosebud and Star are very naughty....(will see you both in my dreams!)  ;)

I've just installed Adobe Lightroom, Snoozi' but it's not recognising any RAW files...Jpeg isn't a problem, but any RAW files on the mem card and it just tells me there are no files on the card.
I can download them but not via Lightroom. It's probably some small tweak I'm missing.

same problem so went back to SHQ setting 3072x2304
on mine it says RAW data is in ORF format .....so i think i'd need to download a converter to change them to JPEG... far to complicated for me
i think RAW files can be upto 6x larger than JPEG files so it's alot of data stored on your card
but i imagine you have greater flexability when processing these files
ALL PHOTOGRAPHS ARE COPYRIGHT

I'm guessing your 'ORF' describes your camera type RAW file. For a Nikon it's NEF, for a Canon it's CR, Pentax is PEF and mine is ARW. My camera is supported but Lightroom isn't recognising the files....have to delve deeper I guess.

My OH likes to shoot in RAW. He uses a programme called Pixmantec Rawshooter. You can fiddle around with the image and then send it over to adobe and fiddle with it more lol
Hope this is of some help :)

ken, I don't know much about raw files, but I am a bit of a nerd. I was under the impression that they're all encoded slightly differently, even different models from the same manufacturer. I thought a major "weakness" was that this will eventually mean any given photo will become obsolete... As such, this would mean that although .raw is a file type, not all .raw files could be read by any given type of software.

More than happy to be wrong...

Adobe Lightroom recognises my camera but for some reason doesn't 'see' there are RAW files on the disc. Might try reloading the software.

I had difficulties getting photoshop to recognise raw files from my camera and in the end I switched to tif mode without problem. I don't think there is a noticeable difference between tif and raw at any given resolution and the tif's are easily converted to jpgs for Internet use. Whenever possible I stay away from any proprietary file formats.

Thanks Ollie'/Eristic...Jpeg and other formats are OK...it's just a bit frustrating to buy software and not be able to use it as the box states! I can download RAW into another programmme and transfer from there, but that defeats the object...I'll play with it 'til I get it...I think!... :-\

i have a nikon d40, i got a copy of picture project with it. any raw converter software will do what you need.
which is to convert your raw images into tiff files or jpegs.
i think that psp will convert files for you too ;)

i am in lust with my camera!

and a gratuitous shot of idiot dog to make you all smile :)

i am still stunned at the fact i own a digital camera without shutter lag!

Stick around, Star. We all started with a Brownie...well, some of us!  :o
Look at Bunjies first pic...what is it? Well, it's a bit of a tree isn't it...but look 'into' the photo'....see how she's drawing your eye into the picture by using the tree roots...the main focus, the tree 'sculpture' is brought into perspective by her inclusion of an out-of-focus shot of the tree in the distance. That gives a sense of balance, perspective and focus to the whole thing...go out, shoot away...look at your results, do the same shoot later and you'll see a speedy development of your technique.
Good 'hunting'.
(New Comp section opening shortly...I'd like to see your efforts there)
