Where to buy plants?
« on: October 05, 2007, 11:50:42 »
We haven't been very organised (still new to this) so we don't have any cabbage plants (or any other over winter plants) to go in.

Does anyone know where we can buy baby plants ready to go in? I've been in a few garden centres but they don't seem to sell them. Do I need to find a specialist nursery?

Any advice gratefully received!

I saw some the other day in Hertford market (which won't help directly since I see that you're in Chester), but you may find local street markets helpful.

We've ordered from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MEADOW-PARK-NURSERY and there are various other eBay stores that specialise in veg plants.  They're all good value if you want to order quite a lot, but for single trays the postage costs tend to be high. There are also slight delays at the moment because of the postal strike.

Very few do do now possibly because it is getting near Xmas and that is a more lucrative market!!

Am I being cynical? ??? ::)

Bridgemere had some, in the Bulb Hall, bit expensive but then they usually are. Grosvenor may have had some, did not look. Not been to any of the ones up the Wirral, Burton and Gordale recently so cannot say about them.

I had the same problem with leeks - used Delfland Nurseries - very nice people.

Worth giving them a call first in case they have any "leftovers"

Not everyone's favourite shop, but I was in Wyevales (at Woking) today and they had loads of Brassica and a few winter salads.

This is the first year I've noticed a (albeit limited) selection of brassicas and other winter veg at our local Homebase - might be worth a look?

Welcome to the site :D

I got a deal on two types of cabbage, two types of broccolli and caulli's (15 of each type) for £10 from Suttons; www.suttons.co.uk but they don't seem to have the offer on now  :'(

I still have 2 broccolli plants left over - I could post them to you?

Or.... have just found this on the Thompson and Morgan site, but I have never bought from them so can't rate their service I'm afraid...

EDIT:  Sorry - I didn't look at the despatch dates - they are for next year :(

Are you on speaking terms with any of the more established allotment holders where you are?  Perhaps if you speak to them they might be able to let you have some.  Often they will set more than they need in case of problems...

Just a thought  ;D  Hope you get sorted soon :)
