« on: October 01, 2007, 10:48:52 »
All mooli radishes I grew this summer had holes and maggots in them. and now I noticed turnips have the same bug! >:( What are they and how can I prevent the damage?

possibly and even probably turnip maggot - the best prevention is to make later sowings of these - I tend to leave my turnips and mooli until august onwards

Thanks calendula! I'm so glad I sowed more radishes and turnips in August. Hopefully they will be free of maggots! :D

while identifying what the grub was in my cabbage roots I read that the cabbage root fly grub eats the main root of radish, swede and turnip also the roots of alysumm, aubrietias, stocks and wallflowers as they are all members of the brassica family. to help prevent it earlier in the season it says to cut down hedge parsly before it flowers as the flies feed on it before laying eggs
