oh tim they are gorgeous!!
I might try those next year. As I still have an organic veg box coming in (just as well with my rotten harvest), I get plenty of chard (silverbeet I call it) but not that colourful!
My kids love it, I think they are the only under 20's on earth to like the stuff!!!

One question:
What happens to the colours when you cook it???
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

Not at all boring Tim - it is that that inspires the rest of us to try something different next year!  What varieties are there?

Antipodes - my kids like it as well, and I thought the same as you!  So that makes at least four (how many do you have? - I have two!)

What a 'turn-up' that some 'young' can enjoy. SO good for you by all new reports. Much depends upon the presentation?

Colour? The stems retain a bit of colour. Great for stir fries.

Cooking? It's all been said  - but always cook 1" cut stems a few mins first. Garlic, Lemon, a spoonful of Water. Or Saag Aloo? What, again??

And SO many fillings - eg Jamie's Fish Pie, Pasta ............

That was a lot of Chard!!

Pity it tastes so disgustingly unpleasant to me!

oh dear Palustris, do you really think it is disgusting? OK the stems are quite bland and the green bits are strong but it's not gross!!!
I always think you need to cut teh green bits finely, not like spinach.
I do a gratin with strong cheese, that livens it up a bit.
It is also very nice Provencal style, green and white bits in a tomato and onion sauce then gratineed under the grill.

For me its nice to look at and thats where it ends.I would put it in the flower bed where I could appreciate it more than on my platter. It wouldn't do for us all to like the same things
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

It does look grand.

Never had the pleasure of it.

Maybe we should arrange a trip to the Cotswolds for a tasting? ;) ;D
