Soya beans?
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:33:23 »
Hello,

I have just realised that my soya beans are actually yin yang beans, so I have lost my soya beans ??? The sun faded all my labels >:(

The ones I think may be soya beans have small yellow flowers , have grown about 6 ft tall and have pods which are wavy down the sides.

Anyone got any ideas.

Also,if they are soya beans, can I eat them like runner beans, as I have already picked a lot, or must they be used as dry beans?

Thanks

cj :)

Did you per chance sow asparagus peas? These have pods that have a kind of wavy frill down the side?

Garjan,

sorry I didnt explain it very well. They are flat like runner beans, but the edges go in and out, like an 8 only lots of them in a row?????

I'll have to take a pic when I get time

Plants are usually about 2-21/2 feet tall , there is usually only 2 beans in pod, sometimes  three seeds , other beans have many more seeds which is why they look wavy, as the pod grows the waves will show you how many seeds.,use them when the seeds have swelled in the pod then cook the whole pod, they have a buttery taste, or grow on till  ready to dry.

So if you have only 2 or three beans in each pod I would be confident they are soya beans , if they have more than three then not. Oh and they are hairy, flat at first but will get plump as the seeds swell inside.

This might help - these were my soyas a couple of years ago:

flowers are tiny insignificant purple things, plants no more than 18" high.

They are light green. I tried using some as runner beans, but they were REALLY tough, so I am assuming they must be a type to grow for the mature beans.
