I originally concurred with the learned OllieC (he of ceramic butterdish fame) :D
The closest picture in my wild flower bible is mugwort, but having googled the images it doesn't look 'quite right'
http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.wildflowersofontario.ca/mugwort1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.wildflowersofontario.ca/mugwort.html&h=576&w=432&sz=96&hl=en&start=20&tbnid=C3qBOJjWWiNLtM:&tbnh=134&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmugwort%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG
Then again, it ALSO comes close to Tyneside Leopardplant but the leaves are a bit different:
http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.wildflowersofontario.ca/mugwort1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.wildflowersofontario.ca/mugwort.html&h=576&w=432&sz=96&hl=en&start=20&tbnid=C3qBOJjWWiNLtM:&tbnh=134&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmugwort%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den
The leaves look a bit like poppy leaves don't they? Maybe you've discovered a new species of poppy ;D

very similar to Rhus lacinata... Sumach...
I don't think Phacelia.. flowers wrong and leaves more nettle like...but on the same page in my book just spotted 'Bells of Ireland Molucella laevis..white flowers and apple green shell like calyses on 'spikes'

Think your links are a bit long Trixiebelle, try this,
http://tinyurl.com/
this is certainly arousing interest, but have not seen anything like it,
I am still going for the 'bird seed' theory, or a bird bought it in,
like the idea of discovering a 'rare plant'!!!!

Thanks Beth, the 'flowers' look very similar but the leaves are not the same,
had a message saying it could be Ragweed,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragweed
the picture at the bottom of this page certainly looks like it.
thanks for all your help

Just discovered the same sort of plant growing under our bird table. This is very odd as we only ever feed peanut and sunflower. However our neighbours do give one of those wild vird food mixes.

Yes I am convinced it comes from the bird seed, I shall be in that part of the garden next weekend, so it will go then, but it has been fun trying to find out what it is.

if it is near the bird table this doesn't mean it is in the bird seed from the table but
deposited
by birds whilst feeding there - so in that sense it could have come from anywhere
