About 5years ago my mum give me a dwarf("it will only grow to about a foot tall..well that's what the nice man said. ::)") conifer to go in a old sink with a few alpines, well as you can see its a bit bigger than a foot now...6 times bigger.  :o So i thought i better find out what it actually is, not even sure it's a conifer as it loses it's leaves in the winter, but than again  as it has had  cone's on it this year..so it could be.  :-\

P.S. will it get any bigger  ??? as it about kills me now to move it in the pot it's in. :'(

Could it be a larch? That's the only deciduous conifer I know!

Either Japanese or European larch, or a hybrid of the two. The exciting news is that it can grow 20mtrs in as many years ;D ;D......apparently good for attracting many kinds of birds.

Whatever it is, being kept in a pot will/should restrict its growth. If it had been in the ground, it would probably be a lot bigger after 5 yrs.

We have a eucalyptus in a large pot, and although it's about 10 yrs old, has never got bigger than 6 foot tall. (Mind you, I have clipped the top out a couple of times, trying to make it bush a bit)

Think of it as a large Bonsai?

With regards to moving it, why don't you find a spot where it looks good and leave it there?

As it loses it needles in winter I would go for a larch.

Its definitely Larch of one variety or another. This is a timber tree so  can grow to 100 feet. Your best bet is to just restrict it and feed. Better still find it a nice place in the countryside and let it be free to do its own thing. Its not really an ornamental tree but would suit a stately home garden if you happen to have one.

I believe it is a larch too. 

Froglegs, your garden is lovely and looks a good size.  Would there not be room to plant it by the fence at the bottom of the garden, shown in your first picture?

The trouble is it just does not look right in my garden, have tried one or two spots but it just seems out a place and allways ends up back on my lawn in its pot where it some how looks at home.It's just a bugger to move when it's time cut the grass.

Just told my mum it's not dwarf and when it gets to a 100ft will need a bigger sink. ::)
