BLIGHT Do's and Don'ts

Having just thrown out all my greenhouse tom's, and only just found the start of blight  on my pink fir apples.

i was just wondering if there is any Do's and Don'ts  with this Bloody Blight malarkey, for a newbie like me.  I've been very lucky and never had blight in six years. 

should i cut off the Halums (spelling)  of my Pink fir apples, even though they are not quite there yet, will that spare the potatoes ??

will it affect the Cucumbers in my GH ??  can i plant anything in the soil that had the  affected Toms in ?  i was going to grow in bags next year anyway.

other that peas does it affect anything else  ???   

can you eat any fruit/Veg from affected plants ??

i hope this new load of rain hasn't affected any one to badly,  it must such and awful thing to have to go through, my heart goes out to any one that is affected.

any help very much appreciated.

The PFA are best picked over and sprayed as they won't be making tuber yet..
Where did the peas come in???

As far as I know, blight only attacks members of the solanum family, so spuds and toms.  I wonder if it affects ornametals like the potato vine????

Shouldn't affect your cucs or your peas.  Yes you can eat the spuds from blighted plants.  The green toms, so long as they weren't going rotten, you could use, even if the fruit ripens, you can use it.

It has been a lousy year for blight, very early thanks to this wet, warm weather.

mmmm just asked that question on another thread  :-[ thankyou emma jane i felt sure the clean potatoes were alright to eat and its good someone else agrees that it is alright to plant other things in the cleared ground

You say that you can eat the tomatoes...... even if they have the brown blisters on them?? They dont look that edible!
I have just noticed mine, the stalks are ok, just the fruit!
And they were ok this morning :(
The toms and pots at the lottie are long gone, so now disappointed that this has happened at home:(

Still in the plot   36 Leeks, 1x rows parsnips, 2x  rows chard, psb, broccoli, 5 rows garlic, 1 row swede, lots of onions - started in rows, but the birds had them and now they are random!!

I've been eating them for about 3 weeks! They were definitely tubers (and some very large)

Another question about tomato blight - I have 7 black buckets of soil where  tomato plants were grown that got the blight. What can I do with the soil? Can I spread it on my raised beds? I'd hate to have to take it to the tip!

Course you can Tricia... the spores won't over winter on the soil itself but in waste tubers and volunteers...

I began digging over our blighted potato bed today, but had to stop as way too hot - they're disgusting aren't they, mushy and slimy - yuk!

I'm attempting to get rid of the foliage (not that there's any left now) and dig out all of the spuds in the bed - am I doing the right thing?  I'm guesssing i don't want them left in there to sprout and grow all over again next year?

Glad you mentioned it's okay to eat the ones that look okay, i've saved some that looked fine & will wait a couple of days to make sure they don't go rotten before eating x

I can relate to your problem Pompeydude... last week I had 24 healty plants in the parents greenhouse... this week I have 24 leafless, black stalked things. Aaargh!
