little flies
« on: July 14, 2007, 16:55:56 »
I can't take a picture at the moment of them but I have hundreds of little tiny black flies in my greenhouse. They have been there for a few weeks but now there are loads more.
They dont fly around until you get near them and they only stay on the soil of my young plants. They dont seem to be doing any damage for what I can see but I'm getting really fed up with them now and want to get rid of them.
I dont know what they are called and so I can't find out anything about them.

Sounds like the sciarid fly also known as the fungus fly.

Thanks to all who replied.
I solved the problem in the end by potting up all my seedlings, sealing my geranium seeds in a propergator and throwing all my bulbs.
I found out the little flies had destroyed my bulbs and so they were never going to grow.
Now that they are all gone things are growing alot better now.

Normall household fly spray killed the flies but not their young in bedded in the soil.

Take your pick TEE GEE
Fungus Fly, Shore gnats, Moth Fly or March fly.

Lavender, Provado2, which is basically a vine weevil killer, will have the added bonus of killing greenfly and white fly on plants  It will also kill the scariad grubs in the compost.

I would only use this on ornamentals, definitely not on anything we were going to eat.
