Weasel/Stoat - was that what killed my hen??
« on: July 25, 2007, 18:44:37 »
My little darling cat - Kahlua, has just caught and killed a weasel or stoat, about 8 inches long, dark brown, with lighter underbelly, could that have been what killed my chicken the other night?

Kathi

Update: whatever it was , it was playing dead under the car, and when I went to pick it up, with a pair of barbeque tongs, it ran off, chased by Kahlua, with Bailey meandering behind!!!! :o

I've now managed to lock both cats in, and I've no idea whare the weasel/stoat has gone - the neighbour must have thought I'd gone mad - walking down the road, calling Kahlua, with a large pair of BBQ tongs in my hand! ;D

Shame about your chicken, it could have been the Stoat.  They are viscious creatures really and hypnotise rabbits before the kill....  Not a weasel, they are much thinner and smaller than you described.

Weasel. A stoat is a lot bigger, and wouldn't have any trouble seeing a cat off.

Thanks for info, I tried to look weasels and stoats up on internet, but couldn't really find a site to tell me the difference - whatever it was, I'm just glad it's gone!

Please  leave them alone and keep your cat under control.  Animal rights people have released too many Mink which kill everything except badgers and foxes, hence few stoats, weasels, voles.

Yes it would kill your chickens but more likely to kill all of them as they get in a killing frenzy.

As for hypnotising rabbits?  Everything fazes rabbits.  Rabbits are stupid and destructive

The good news on that front is that as otters increase, mink, which compete with them, decrease. They'll be with us permanently, no doubt, but their bigger relatives seem to be well able to control them.

Telling the difference is easy: one's weaselly distinguished the other's stoatally different.

I'll get me coat.....

Barnowl, that was dreadful.  (I will make sure I repeat it to my children and pass it off as my own) ;D
