    • Jill's Allotment - Plot 70 Quarry Road, Preston Parish, Eaglescliffe
Plot 70 Quarry Road, Eaglescliffe, Stockton on Tees - very overgrown so a work in progress - think there are quite a few plots still going but again overgrown and need lots of work - im just one of about a half a dozen new people on the site

I have seen the pictures and you have your work cut out.

Mine had been left for 3 years and the couch grass and ran riot over what was very cultivated ground.  The roots are/where a mat down to around 6 inches.  I have dug over the plot apart from one area about 3 times by hand with a fork picking the roots out.  First dig they were about 12 inches long,  second 3 to 6 inches and third time about a inch with shoots on. I am still getting bits coming through and the potato bed is more like a cereal field but I will hand weed that when the rows are clearly through.

I get LOADS of advice from the old hands around me but at the end of the day I am doing the work and have done my own thing at times.

The guys are VERY generous with plants and bits and pieces,  I got a 80' hose from the guy next door on a reel with all fittings in spot on nick because he had loads ( he cut his in half last week with the rotavator so probably regrets giving it away).

24 mixed tomato plants today and I get all the left over seedlings when the guys have pricked out what they want ...nearly forgot 24 dahlia cuttings the other day.

The only problem with the 'garden' is the hours fly by .

YESSSSSSSSS
I have got my lottie, higher lane here in Liverpool.
I will put some before pictures up later as I only took a few yesterday because of the rain.
So will take some more when I go to the lottie later and post them when I work out how.
But believe me it is in a right state

When I got my plot, I had a choice of two- one was at the end of the street but right next to a farmer's field, unfenced , very overgrown and reputed to be infested with rats and rabbits. The other was about a mile away, cheaper and had been covered in black plastic for a year or so. I chose the second one, but I'm still not sure I made the right choice, especially when I see the big pile of manure left next to the first one by the farmer!

;D  hello everyone, I'm new to this site and it is fantastic!!  My allotment is in Felixstowe Suffolk.  I took it on last october - 10 rods!  It hadn't been worked for about 18 months and of course didn't look too bad in the autumn.  Boy did I get a shock last week after the rain and sun (the little we have had) and the weeds have grown!!!!  Every where!!!!

A good friend of mine has volunteered to go halves with me so that will make it so much easier but I'm still finding it daunting when I get down there.

I want to do it all organically too.  I'm collecting a scythe from a friend tomorrow to cut down those weeds and grass and then get carpet and thick plastic down until we are ready to attack it.

Lovely talking, must go and organise my two girls.

Kirstie

Sorry this thread name is abit confusing! there are different threads for different areas- this one is for Nortn of England. If you search for the one for your region, you might find other members near you.

Welcome, anyway! ;D

P.s. I see you've worked it out!
