A friends cauli's have developed a purple tinge to them.....Any idea what it could be

Don't know about purple but caulies can be affecrted by the weather .It is quite common for some summer caulies to have a pink tinge .. There are some out that are resistant to this think Gypsy f1 is one of these ..

Its heritage might have something to do with i.e. it might have been bred/crossed with a 'purple variety' at sometime.
