problems with broad beans and health
« on: August 03, 2007, 09:27:14 »
my mum in law has been told not to eat any more broad beans, she has been told they can make you anaemic, she has a problem with this normally
so, anyone else heard about this, it's a shame she loves 'em  :)

I'll ask OH when she gets up, she's a dietitian... a proper one, if Anaemia is the problem get her to eat more choc.. the best dietary source of iron, except the white stuff(choc), I think something in beans binds the iron which is why Red Kidney beans are so toxic...

there is a genetic disease associated with broad beans - it's called Favism. It is a type of anaemia.  it can be very serious. You can get it from breathing the pollen even. It most affects people from the Mediterranean and Africa, and almost always affects men (apparently). Does your mother-in-law fit any of those categories? Seems a bit odd I must say

Have a Google, but bear in mind t'internet is an hypocondriacs paradise

well, as far as I know, she's from liverpool, 89, has had a heart attack, pacemaker, has an anaemia disorder where she cannot absorb iron and has a bad reaction to iron medications,as to the origins, i think Heinz varieties..there are lots of people in liverpool who are many races, all mixed up, myself included
are there any more veggies that can have a detrimental effect on health ?

Never heard of this before - you live and learn every day on A4A.

Can I inject a smile on the thread despite the serious nature of the topic?

Does your mother-in-law fit into the 'MEN' category Manics?  ;D

the joke was intentional Trix. I also saw a page that said the condition was "sex-related". Thought of suggesting that your MIL should Stop It Immediately (filthy beast!)

maybe for some normal healthy people as they get older the enzyme production drops and they start to have problems (lots of other things start dropping as you get older), or maybe the Doctor has tried everything else and has started to get desperate. It's unusual for women to suffer from it. It's one of those"my mother made me a homosexual" type genetic disorders (if I gave her the wool, would she make me one?)

Also being from Liverpool, I wonder just what's in my gene pool. I always thought it would probably be Chinese

My lactase production decided to stop totally so now can't tolerate any lactose (In milk and all milk products virtually) this is very uncommon in white Europeans but quite common in Africa and the far east... as my family name is a small village outside Merseyside there is probably some foreign in my past...

Is the enzyme you mention Erythropoietin ?

I'm anaemic and take Erythropoietin (EPO) injections.

My Doc. has never mentioned not eating broad beans - if fact I scoff loads of them every year and I'm still standing.

how interesting oggiesnr, tho I don't think

"Oh, you mean the pound of sumptuous, steamed, fresh organic ones I ate with the beetroot salad two nights ago?" I replied.

is necessarily an accurate record of the conversation he had

why did b beans suddenly become a problems for him?

thanks for that site reference, oggie..she has so far had kidney failure, brought on by something to do with iron, heart attack due to the same, so, it looks like it's favism, mind you, she's 89..something's gotta go  ;D

still looking into this, I've now found an article headed 'people who are allergic to birch tree pollen may also be allergic to carrots, parsley, coriandr, parsnips, celery and fennel..all contain similar allergy causing proteins
many other groups of fruit and veg also cross react..the Royal College of Pathologists has published a free info pamphlet..How can plants make you ill'..it can be downloaded from www.rcpath.org   :)
ah, just tried it, says I've got to log in..will do it later  ;D
