where can I get seed potatoes now?
« on: June 28, 2007, 12:23:49 »
Hi I am hooked on the potatoes now but running out fast- I want to plnt some first earlies to be ready for xmas- I have found them online at dobies and T & M but wondered if there was anywhere a little less expensive- they are coming up at 13 pounds including delivery!

I have had catalogues from Marshalls and Dobies I think, and they both had spuds.

They are really expensive, and seem only available in large quantities (ie 20 or so). How about finding some existing first or second earlies with several eyes on them, and set them aside for chitting and planting?  Actually, I have a feeling that second croppers don't need chitting; someone will put me right if that's not true!

Xmas spuds - do they need to be grown under cover or can they be planted outside? I've never tried it before but would love to if I can use my first earlies... :)

We planted them in the open, forgot to keep an eye on them, the haulms all got eaten by slugs, who were ravenous in the autumn, and they should have been fleeced in cold weather. So better under cover, if you can.  :)

What about using some regular supermarket spuds that have chitted because they've been left too long?

I've got 2 bags that have sprouted and I'm going to try to get these in this weekend (weather pending).

I tried it about 10 years ago in a small veggie plot in my garden and it worked fine.  I got as many tubers from them as I have with other spuds in my lottie and don't remember losing any of them.

well I just might give it a go then! conduct a little potato experiment in my back garden- I've nothing to lose as there are only so many butternut squash/ acorn squash/ spinach pots I can do!
