New film - Grow Your Own
« on: June 03, 2007, 19:12:57 »
Evening all :)

I went to a preview screening of a new film called "Grow Your Own" last night. It is a fictional tale, but based on an idea developed by a film-maker (Carl Hunter) who has been involved with Art in Action and a number of refugees who have made their home in and around Liverpool. The council provided people with allotments as a means of providing structure and social contact. I believe that he made a short documentary about the scheme and then decided it would make for a good film.

It is very funny indeed, despite some stories the refugees tell about the hell they have left behind and it is warming to see how the story develops and the strong community that forms between all the allotment keepers/owners when faced with adversity, despite a little resistance to start with from the existing inhabitants!

I am not usually very liberal-minded but could not help but be impressed by the film, although I was not aware of the Liverpool allotment project until this afternoon (and did some research). Someone had told me it was based on real events, which is why I wondered if anyone on A4A is familiar with the film or project it's based on. I don't think it is actually out for a while yet, but will look up some more info on it if people are interested.

Now time for some furniture moving. Sure to leave me with countless aches and pains tomorrow morning!

I read about this film in the Sunday paper last week and decided then that it was time we found our way back to the cinema.

It does look good.  Found the trailer on YouTube if you are interested.

I'm not so sure... it has a good cast, so that might spread the appeal a little. I really hope it does well though as it's a gem of a film.

I was looking at the GYO site and there's a competition to win some gardening-related goodies. Well worth entering that!

Btw... it's out next Fri (June 15th)  8)

Might even go to the cinema for that one instead of waiting for the DVD!

Been away a few days on business and come back to find loads of interest in the film. That's so cool!

Glad you loved it dgillings! I got my tickets from the paper too 8)

I listen to LBC (radio station) a lot down here (in London) and they've got some competition going next week to win tickets and money too I think for people's allotment or garden tales! I don't have an allotment (YET!) and not much of a garden, but thought I'd give it a mention. LBC 97.3 competition

Here's another clip on Metacafe.

Off to bed now... it's been an exhausting few days  ::)

Went today and It is great - would recommend anyone to go see it.... We can all  identify with the allotment "characters" plus the acting is excellent

WHY is this being shown at so few cinemas? This is now its third week out and it's only on at the small cinema in York at 3.30 in the afternoon! At this rate I'll have to wait for the DVD.

Apparently the DVD is out in August.

We will have to wait for that as it's not being shown near to us.
