Rodent question
« on: June 17, 2007, 22:15:43 »
Popped to the plot today and happened to peak into my waterbut on plot 2 to check it was filling up, and floating on the surface was a drowned rat!  A big brown bugger, and I mean a big one!  My question is, drain the water away, clean butt and start again, or use as normal?

Depends if you want to drink the water.

Lobbed it into the undergrowth for the foxes to have for their tea.  :-X

I don't think the plants will mind if you use it as normal. There again, if you're getting as much rain as we are in Wiltshire you could empty, clean and have it filled up again by the end of the day ;D

Didn't they used to put a dead rat in the barrel when they made cider? Maybe still do it'd explain the taste.

Oh well, I am using the water - the body was still fresh (bleugh) so I don't suppose it did much damage to the water.  Thanks for the advice though, at least you didn't all scream 'GET RID OF IT!'  ;D

You'll know this already but the only thing to avoid is splashing it on leaves you're going to eat... especially if they'll be eaten soon like lettuce. There's no such things as one rat - and Weils (sp?) disease is sposed to be horrid.

After all the rain we have had tonight, I imagine the waterbut is now full to the brim, so any contamination will be very dilute!  I shall however use it with caution for the time being.
