Sprouting garlic
« on: June 24, 2007, 11:58:30 »
My garlic has started sending out shoots - like an onion does when it's bolting.

The bulbs aren't very well formed yet, so should I cut the shoots off?

Yes - do they take energy from the bulbs like an onion?

I think I read that because the cloves are separate from the stem that it's ok to leave let them bolt..... ???

Depends on the type of garlic. I take all mine off. Apparently the flower buds are considered a delicacy so next year I'll freeze them.

Thanks, I'll snip them then to be on the safe side and try the shoots in a stir fry. :)
