Fleecing brassicas
« on: June 20, 2007, 09:06:57 »
This is my first year at growing brassicas and I know I need to fleece them against the butterflies.  But how long should I leave them fleeced for - all summer?  Any ideas would be gratefully received.

many thanks

This is the first time I have covered my brassicas, I intend to leave the netting on until I don’t see any more butterflies.

Fleece - Mesh - Netting.

The first 2 against flea beetle, net against pigeons &, if it's small hole stuff, against Cabbage Whites.

Yes - all season against C/Ws, but only until plants are growing away for the beetle.

I have netted my cabbage since we put ours in, months ago. My Primo ar just about ready now so I picked my first cabbage on saturday and had it for sunday dinner. It was spotless, not a mark on it, solid in the centre like a cabbage is supposed to be and absolutely gorgeous.

I leave mine on until I have picked them all. Trouble is the cauliflower I put in in the spring is lifting the mesh lol

I have to net mine as the pigeons just demolish them otherwise. I usually leave mine on unitil they are fully grown. busy_lizzie
