Any peeps in north notts or am i the one and only?
« on: June 16, 2007, 17:26:40 »
Hi got my plot back in April not done to much with it planted some bits, but just wonder if anyone else on here had a plot near by that could offer advice etc... my plots on Gateford Road Site Worksop. Need inspiration, got a college course i must complete before the end of the month and i'm getting itchy green fingers  ::). Can't concentrate on course as i'm wanting to go to my plot all the time :D Hopefully there'll be someone out there!

Hi legendaryone, i'm beginning to think i may be the only one! How's your plot? I wondered how plots differ in terms of price, water, sheds and stuff. We don't have a community area nor are we allowed greenhouses, we have a coal like shed, and a tap for water and some old wheelie bins which collect rain water. But the sheds have flat roofs. How long have you had your plot for?

Hi notlaps :) I've had my plot since last september. My site is one of the better ones fro what i've read, pricewise it is 8 pence a square metre (half price for OAPs) Water is £8. We are allowed sheds, greenhouses and poly tunnels. Several plots have all three, if fact one plot has two sheds, two greenhouses and a poly tunnel ! There is an allotment shop and community hut. Everyone is really friendly and helpful :) This coal shed you spoke of is it for everyone to use or is it yours ?

Sounds like an interesting plot, i should have got mine early, the shed is a brick built one with a flat concrete roof, every plot has one, unfortunantly mine was one of the ones that was burnt out when some vandels got in, they all used to have windows but since that happened last Nov they bricked them all up. I'm thinking about painting the inside of mine as it's got smoke damage every where. I'm very new to gardening, and just trying out things, if they work or not i'll keep trying half of my plot is over grown but luckly enough for me the person who had it before, covered the other half with black plastic so i've been able to put some crop in this year! Although i didn't plan it so it looks like some sneezed seeds everywhere!

Well i'm glad you've somewhere for your tools and to shelter when it rains  :) I would paint it a lovely bright colour. I'm just trying stuff myself seeing how things are and what does well and what doesn't. Hopefully next year i will remember the mistakes i made this year and not repeat them  ;D

I'm the same i've kept notes on what's happening on my plot. Me and this other chap want to build a community building, so were going to sound out the rest of the plot holders. Isn't there some allotments in St Ann's in nottingham, there something like the oldest in the country. They had an open day at the beginning of the month. I couldn't make it. :( I was thinking of yellow paint for my shed. My tip is to grow lettuce in an old water tank, i'm doing it and not one slug or snail has touch it  ;D

Eunice, what a small world! u? It's took such a lot of effort this year, as my dad has become very ill and i'm help out as one of his main carer as well as working in sheffield and trying to complete this course i decide to take on a plot! Think i'm crazy  :P but the plot is my safe place i can go there when i'm down and it makes me feel so much better, i've been called sad by people who are supposed to be friend, they say i'm to young, but i don't care, it's helping me although i am a little sad when i jump for joy when i discover another tomatoe or pea's like i did this morning! ;D

nothing sad about being excited about the things that youve grown, ppl dont understand if they dont grow i think there is nothing better than going to the lottie and finding something new has grown.

Again, not North Notts, I did have a plot in South Notts until this happened:

Bingham Town Council closes Bingham Gas Works site
Press release: Bingham Town Council has taken the decision, following information received from Rushcliffe Borough Council, to close the skateboard park and the allotments situated on the former gas works site off Moor Lane in Bingham. The closure will take effect immediately. This decision has also been made in collaboration with the Health Protection Agency and the Nottinghamshire teaching Primary Care Trust.

The decision is a result of the Borough Council receiving a draft report from specialist contaminated land consultants Land Quality Management which identified and concluded that the site contains potentially harmful chemicals. The report was commissioned as part of an ongoing investigation of the former gas works and the area investigated comprised the allotments, old tennis courts, playing fields and skateboard park. The report concludes that the tennis courts and playing fields are not considered a risk and will therefore not be closed.

It is regrettable that the allotments will be closed, however, the Town Council has taken the step of writing to every allotment holder explaining how the closure will affect them.  Bingham Town Council is also stepping up its efforts to identify a new site so the allotment holders can be relocated.

Around six years. We got a letter through the door on Thursday night telling us we had til Monday to remove anything of our stuff. A little coincidental that they decide to survey now, with big plans afoot for a major development of the football fields, and a growing clamour for increased town centre parking.....

Some of the older allotment holders have been there 30 plus years, and are in their 70s, can't see them starting anew.

I think you'll be surprised what the seventy years will do  :) We have had an allotment site close near us and a few of the plot holders have come to our site, two of them have had their plots for fifty years The council did provide new sheds, greenhouses, their plots rotavated and manured. I said to one of them you must be gutted, he shrugged his shoulders and said it was just one of those things.

Well, they're the ones who have made the move - what about the ones you haven't met, who now stay in all day? From speaking to a few at the weekend, it sounds like thats what they see as their future.

I don't envisage the Council moving swiftly on this one. There's not much land around in Bingham, and that which there is is swiftly being snapped up by developpers

You've a good point there  :) Lets hope your council does the right thing and finds you all a nice site and clears and manures it etc.
