« on: May 28, 2007, 21:00:05 »
Hi, thanks to a very kind A4A member I have three of Supersprouts Giganteus beans aka Samos Greek Limas , I have since found a source for more but am interested in the first three. May I ask if anyone else is growing them please,I would like to compare . Out of my three I have 1 just starting to disturb the soil.

 Thank you XX Jeannine

Me !  15 were sown in root trainers on 15/5 and 15 have germinated.  Max height is about 11" and most are working on their second true leaves.

They spent a few days in the leccy propogator and have just been on the east facing window sill.

The Gigantes are the first three rows on the left.

Question is, what do I do with them now ?   ::)

I started last year with 4 beans from a kind member....planted them on a South facing wall on trellis. I had a good crop, two excellent meals and 20 beans for this year. I chitted seed after a good overnight soaking in April. Seedlings brought on in heated propagator then out into my plastic greenhouse thingy. I took a huge risk and replanted 15 x foot high plants up a couple of home made willow WigWams beginning of May. I now have 8 foot high plants producing their first flowers. I'm Sooooo Happy. I just Love Greek Gigantes beans in a tomato based casserole.....can't wait.... ;D

do you treat them just like runners dingerbell.  how do you know when to harvest ?  dumb question i know.

I didn't even soak mine, just sowed them straight into compost.

As far as growing, I soak all my beans before chitting and potting up, I generally get a very high germination rate. IMHO I like to give them a really good start which also means the plants are less likely to succumb to slug damage. The wife objects to windowsills full of plants but that's a small price to pay... ;D I planted them out in an area which had been heavily composted last year as like all beans, they like a moisture retentive home to grow in.  These beans are for storage so leave them on the vine until the whole thing withers away. I love the sound of the dried pods rattling in the wind at the end of Summer, reminds me of times in Greece.. ;D  Obviously there is the issue of rain and damp in the Autumn but as long as you pick and pod on a dry day then spread out on newspaper to dry before storing in jars.

I'm digging my bean bed like mad cos the windowsill is getting a bit overcrowded !

Got half of it done tonight, hopefully will have it finished by Saturday.  Then fingers crossed that the weather looks like improving as I don't want them ripped to bits by the wind before the slugs even have a sniff !

I've not seen many slugs on the plot tbh (I'm sure they're just waiting for the first juice plantlette to go in the ground lol.

Thanks for the tips dingerbell.  Not going to have the luxury of a heavily composted plot, but was going to put a layer of half cookd leaf mould in the bottom of the bed and as much shredded paper that I can get my hands on before the weekend.

I just hope we get some sun this summer.   ;D

Bumping this .................... I've got a whole trellis full of lovely beans nowhere near the wiithering away stage but we had a frost last week which appears to have caught the top of the trellis.

Am I risking losing the whole crop by leaving them on the vine to take their chances ?  A sample pod provided good size beans, should I leave them where they are for as long as I can, or should I rescue them ?
