I think the key identifier is the legs of a harlquin ladybird are brown rather than the black of the natives.

and harlequins have a very distinctive 'M' (or 'W' if you're the other way round) on their heads.
(not 100% certain that our native labybugs
don't
ever have this though... :-\)
