Technical terms
« on: May 20, 2007, 15:12:42 »
I was wondering whether there are a glossary for terms such as 'clearing' an allotment.  Does this mean cutting back the grass or digging it up.  As you can see my knowledge is pretty woeful and any website suggexstions would be greatly appreciated

hi, its a good idea a glossary, i havent looked in the wiki lately but there may be something like it in there; and if there isnt then maybe it is something we could think about.

i think 'clearing' a plot probably means different things to dofferent people but i think most would say it means to clear it of weeds and debris and make ready to cultivate (dig, sow and grow).   :)

When we took our first one I think sanitize it would have better described it, it was really disgusting. full of piles of clay cat litter, loads of it, John had to bag it all and it was stinky and wet !!

This is my allotment at various times of the year;

Regarding a 'Glossary' I remember uttering a few words that might not be allowed in a glossary when I started up my plots, but all was OK in the end!

I think 'clearing' would normally involve digging out everything you don't want.

Generally speaking in allotment terms 'clearing' means pretty much what it says on the tin, getting yourself some clear space to enable further cultivation to proceed unhindered. This can mean different things in different contexts but for a neglected plot would normally mean gaining access to the soil surface, locating boundaries etc. On an established plot could simply mean removing the remains of crops at the end of the season.

Regarding a glossary of terms, I think this is a good idea and as I have a number of websites with database facilities, I may consider setting a page up next winter. Meantime perhaps someone would like to assemble a list of lottie terms.
