« on: May 13, 2007, 15:48:23 »
Carrying on from Pinching Out - this is the REAL Catch 22 situation.

No, it is not a sideshoot!

As before Tim, I always end up with some double stems...

Quote - Murderer :D ;) !!

And, in passing, I did not continue that thread because the questions have since been so ably answered elsewhere.

Some of my `heritage` do that-two real stems-and they arrive almost overnight?

i had one or two do this last year and i (stupidly) pinched one out. they didnt like that at all and the remaining shoot curled itself into a contorted sillyness and never really recovered.

How do you choose which bit to KILL ?  Please don't tell me you get rid of the whole plant ?  What did it ever do to you ?   8)

The right hand bit - being just below the flower truss. Logic??

the truss looks central to me but the right one does look a wee bit thinner i guess.

Indeed - the truss IS central - with a 'leader' to its left & right. Thought it best not to have a shoot robbing that truss.

just been out there and done a bit of murdering myself.

some of the plants (Biscombe's Muchamiel and Tres Cantos) are so congested around the growing tip that it's hard to tell what's what.   :o

I never got in the g/h last night and all of a sudden the place is exploding !

Looking good.

A bit of frost last night, hope my outside Marmande were ok. They look a bit mutated anyway, what with the odd central flower.  ;)

I got a couple of marmande from a bring and buy, is this flower bud typical or am I growing a mutant sunflower? I've never grown this variety before.

Just prune out the smaller one or the less developed one, Tim. Then tie in the remainder and all will be fine. I get this happen to me quite frequently, (that and side shoots that get missed! ;D). Usualy one has a more developed flower truss on it than the other, so this is usualy the one to save. Twin leaders are no diferent to side shoots, both dilute the growing energies of the plant, and you wont get double the crop for having two main shoots. So CUT IT OUT!  ;D ;)

I prodded it to make sure it wasn't wiggly, just appears to be a clump of very tight leaves !!
