Strawberry problem
« on: May 13, 2007, 09:51:20 »

I'm asking this on behalf on Lilymarlene. Can anyone identify what is causing this?

Does anyone recognise this problem with my strawberries? The fruits themselves grow little green scales all over them as in the one on the right. Inside is strawberry flesh, but it has this "hairy" leaf jacket. I pulled most of them off weeks ago but seem to have left this one.

The one on the left shows a little of the problem near the stalk.

I have scoured the net for info on this and have found nothing.

The symptoms shown on the strawberry on the right hand side is called phyllody, or a phylloid condition, where parts of a plant that shouldn't,  turn leafy.
There's been some research in the USA to indicate that it can be caused by contamination with glyphosate weedkillers at certain points in the plant's growth, but this isn't conclusive. Other plants get this too, it can happen on flowers etc, and can be caused by other irritants, not just pesticides.
