sweet potatoes - info needed
« on: May 09, 2007, 13:06:26 »
Does anyone have any experience with growing sweet potato?

The current KG or GYO mag has an offer for 2 x 5 slips for about £8 and I'm tempted, but don't really know what/how they grow...

...I've heard its related to bindweed, so I'm guessing I'm looking at some form of tuber with a bind weedy top shoot....

?does this sound right
?When is best to plant them
?how long do they take to grow
?can they be grown next year froma tuber from this year?
?Do I need to give them something to climb around?
?what sort of yeild would should I expect in a Berkshire plot (good soil, well draining)

...any feed back on this would be good.

Thanks

There are some useful threads on sweet potatoes: try putting 'sweet poato'  into the search engine (above)

Thanks for the replies....

...I will admit to forgetting this site has a search function (que "doh" sound & slapping of head)

Leonnie's link & info is great and very informative....

...right, I'm off to cut a chunk (well, page 68) out of my GYO mag and send off for 5 x "T65" slips & 5 x "Beauregard Improved" slips, and all for £8.99 inc P&P....

Once again, thanks.
