Tomato Growing in Straw Bales
« on: May 10, 2007, 11:46:03 »
'morning all ....

a Lottie neighbour begged a bale of Straw from me yesterday, no problem with that ... a little later, on his way home he delivered Courgette plants and some 'ancient' garden tools as a gift .....  I was not looking for anything in return, but he would not take no for an answer .....

During the begging / delivering process I had a running report on all the things you can do with a bale of Straw  ;D

An interesting suggestion was, 'grow your Toms in a bale of straw', apparently all you need to do is cut 2 or 3 holes in the side of a bale, 6 inch diameter and plant the Tommy. Water the whole bale until it is soaked and then water the area around the plant/s with water/Fertiliser mix.

The bale needs soaking well once per week and feeding once per 14 days

The theory sounds good, has anyone tried this ?
My only concern would be any Barley seeds germinating in the Bale (my straw was not treated with Weedkillers when it was growing)

Have done an A4A and Web search but nothing too conclusive (or recent)

all comments / suggestions very welcome

thanks
Mikey

PS the rain .... finally arrived with a vengeance last evening and night, water butts full to overflowing
