got myself a supplier of free horse manure 10 bags a week

can anyone tell me how long i need to let this stand for before using many thanks

How long does it take to drink a cup of tea?

If you need to use it, USE it. If not store it up. At 10 bags a week they may start to gain on you if you are not fully prepared, and willing to use it.

I've got access to a load of pre-composted waste from a swan sanctuary.
It's composed of straw, waste food (fruit & veg) and various types of bird poo.
It's nice and dark and the straw has completely broken down.
There aren't any weeds popping through either.  :D

Has anybody used it (or similar) before?

Anything less than 6 months could possibly be too rich for your crops. Though it would be fine to dig in an area that is not to be panted for a while. The longer it has been left the better so stock it while you can. Keep the first supply separate to subsequent ones as to use first whilst the other ferments.

Hi

the best way to tell when manure is ready to use is what level you find the worms at!  If at the bottom is is very dark and you can't see straw and there are no worms then it is ready.  You will notice that further up nearer the top there will still be worms.  That means that they are still working it (it will also be quite warm to the touch which also tells you that it hasn't finished cooking) so move them out of the way and use the underneath bit first!
